I mentioned before that we've been working on losing weight lately. My husband and I both started using the MyFitnessPal app on our phones to record our calories and exercise. It was quite the eye opener at first to see how many calories we were really consuming. There are so many hidden calories in things! I also started checking ingredients and was pretty appalled by that too! I can't believe how processed some things are. The other day at the store, I picked up a box of generic Nutri-Grain bars, and I couldn't believe the ingredients list! They don't seem like that complex of a snack, but looking at the ingredients makes you think differently.

I've been reading up a lot lately on processed foods and such and I really want to eliminate those in our diets. I don't think it's bad to eat out or order a pizza every once in a while, but as soon as I'm in control of what's for dinner(we're still living at my in-laws) I plan on eating mostly foods that are not loaded with chemicals, and that are more organic. Right now, we haven't been eating too badly, but I want to be even more aware of what we put into our bodies.

I've also been reading a lot of vegan/vegetarian blogs and some books from the library, as well as some sugar/gluten free ones. I'm not planning on going vegan, but I would like to incorporate more plant based meals into our diets. I'm also going to a workshop at Whole Foods in March to learn more about plant based diets.

Things like this video make me want to never not know what I'm eating again!



I've been pinning a lot of recipes/posts from blogs about how to eliminate processed foods and things that can help with that. You can see those on my "A Life Less Processed" board on Pinterest.

As I said, we've been trying(and succeeding :) ) to lose weight, and I think that eating more natural and organic foods will help a lot, but that's not the main reason why I'm so interested in this. I think that we will feel better overall and have better results in the long run if we are eating real foods.

Unrelated, how cute is my dog??? My mom sent me this the other night and I wanted to cry. Miss her! And Bronx too!

I'm not great about avoiding processed food but I won't eat chicken "nuggets" (only strips where I can see the muscle striation) and I have a hard time eating hot dogs and ground beef. It sucks that those are the most affordable meats!

I know what you mean! Especially on a college student budget. It's hard to even be able to afford healthier foods.

I remember when I saw that chicken nugget video on tv. I about died when those kids said they wanted to eat it. There's also a clip where he brings fruits and vegetables to school and the kids didn't know the names of the different fruits/veggies! They had never seen them before. Crazy!!! Have you ever checked out Mel's Kitchen Cafe? She doesn't use processed foods, but she's not a health nut either. Stuff like making her own taco seasoning, or making her own sauces instead of using canned soups, etc. But she still makes a lot of the dishes I grew up with, and nothing is too complicated. I like her approach because it's still affordable and reasonable--especially when you are trying to feed a family.

That's so crazy! I think I've seen some of her recipes on pinterest, but never looked at her site. I'll be sure to go check it out. THanks!
