Healthy Living=Happy Living

Greek culture is all about "Good living." I believe that living healthy allows us to live "good."


One of the most important things I've learned since leaving home for college is that healthy living equals happy living. My mom was always very health conscious and cooked healthy meals for our family. We didn't drink soda very much, and we only made dessert on Sunday. When I went to college, I was on my own for food, and it took me a while to discover that Taco Bell, pizza, and ice cream don't equal a happy body or a happy closet. 

While I still love a good burrito or slice of pizza, I've tried to make more health conscious choices. Some days, I get busy and opt for the unhealthy dinner, but more and more, I don't even want those unhealthy foods. 



Living a healthy life is important to me, but eating healthy to me isn't giving up the foods that you love. There are so many ways to make something healthier, without ruining the taste of the item. 


Just the other day, I made Coconut "Pound" Cake and substituted Fage Greek yogurt for the butter. Instantly, it took a ton of fat out of the cake, and it still tasted delicious and had a great, moist, cakey texture. 


When I made crepes, I put Greek yogurt inside of my crepe with Nutella. It added such a great creamy texture, with an excellent tart flavor. 


A while ago, I made a Double Chocolate Yogurt cake with Greek yogurt as well. You could barely even tell the difference between the yogurt cake and a regular chocolate cake. 


I've also started to substitute unsweetened applesauce for oil in a lot of my baking. It's the perfect addition to my French Toast Cupcakes, as it makes the cupcake dense, like real french toast. 


Another thing I'm working on is not buying processed foods. When looking at labels, I try to only buy foods that have ingredients on them that I can pronounce! It's easier to cook meals that steer away from processed foods, but it's snacks that get me. What seems to be the easiest snack options are packaged processed bars, etc. Key word: PROCESSED! 


Lately, we've been trying to stick to carrots/celery and blue cheese dip, homemade fruit leather, cheese and crackers(both are processed, but we opt for ones with minimal chemicals), almonds, and chips and guacamole for our snacks, and that has made us a lot happier :)


Food is part of our lives every single day, so it should be something we enjoy. Why eat something you hate? 


You can eat healthy, and still enjoy the foods you love. With just simple modifications, you can make a meal or a treat healthier, and still live "good."
