Good Living: Post 2

The other day, I was running on the indoor track on campus. While I was doing that, I was thinking about what brings good living to my life, and what I should write about for my second entry for the Fage "Good Living" give away.

I wanted to write about something that I really felt brought good living to my life, and something that I actually cared about and could personally relate to, not just what I thought would win me a trip to Greece. (Although going to Greece would be way awesome!) But I wanted heart felt posts that showed the real me.

Soon after that, I remembered that I was running, and instantly, I thought, "Why not write about exercise?"

So today, I will be writing about exercise, and how it brings good living to my life.

I've never been the most fit person, but there are definitely times in my life where I've been more fit than others. In high school, I ran cross country. I was one of the worst runners on the team, but I enjoyed it, and learned to love running.

After my freshman year of college, my mom and I ran a half marathon. Finishing that was one of the best moments in my life!

 Soon after, I ran a 10k. I hadn't trained very much, but I did decently well, and enjoyed the race.

After that, my runs were almost non-existent. I exercised every once in a while, but walking to and from classes, the grocery store, and everywhere else kept me in decent shape.

  After I got married in April, I gained a lot of weight. I don't think there was really any key factor in this, but a combination of a lot of things in my life. Regardless, I was very unhappy. I was so happy with my marriage, but unhappy with my body. The tighter my clothes got, the more unhappy I got, but I couldn't find the motivation to make some lifestyle changes. This made me even more unhappy. My husband was great about trying motivate me, but I still struggled. I mostly just ran on the elliptical at the gym. I tried running a few times, but I felt so flabby and jiggly that I didn't even want to.

During the break between semesters, I decided to try running again. I got on the track, ran a few strides, and stopped. I still felt jiggly and gross. I decided to suck it up and just run anyways. It was hard, and I really felt so out of shape, but I kept it up. I kept doing this, and felt better everyday. I noticed I felt less flabby, I was less moody, I slept better at night, I actually felt motivated to exercise, I felt happier, and I wasn't so depressed about the state of my body.

Right now, I still don't fit perfectly in all my clothes, and I couldn't go run a 1/2 Marathon tomorrow, but I feel better, and I know that I'm doing something good for my body.

Lately we've also experimented with swimming and stationary bikes. A friend of ours told us about a challenge on campus-the Lazy Man Ironman, where you compete an Ironman triathlon, but you have a whole month to do it. It's been awesome to have a goal to work towards! I'm not sure if we'll finish, but it has definitely motivated us to exercise more.

I know that without exercise, I cannot have as good of living as I can with it. Life is so much better, I am so much happier, and my outlook on life is so much clearer when I am consistently exercising.

I totally know how that feels, Erika. The thing that finally got me back into shape was Zumba - it was the boost I needed. I got to dance and have a blast while getting back into shape, and I could take it at my own pace. SO nice. I still love running, but when doing that is too hard (while pregnant or just lacking the motivation), I have Zumba. =)

@Jenni-I've been to Zumba before and I loved it! I bet that's a lot easier to do when pregnant too! haha. But I love that it is fun, but still exercise!
