Well, our CA vacation was superb! We got back Sunday night around 8:30, worked the next morning at 8 until 5, then fell asleep at 7 and didn't wake up til this morning at 8, with a massive headache. I went to work late, and then left two hours later after I tossed my cookies in the bathroom. I then tossed them 3 more times(so far) at home. Yay. What a swell day!

Regardless...I don't like looking at food right now, so once I'm better I'll post some recipes. For now, here's a few pics from CA. I'll post more later!

Interview with Leanne Barlow from Elle Apparel

I'm currently vacationing in California, so I've got a few fun posts for you this week. Enjoy! 

A while ago, I had to interview a blogger for a class assignment. I emailed many different bloggers, and didn't hear back from them until after my report was due, but now that many of them have responded to my questions, I decided to post them on here. 
You can read the past ones from Jessica and Lindsey. 
This is from Leanne Barlow, author of Elle Apparel. Her blog is a sewing blog, and she's extremely talented!

1. How did you get started with blogging?  

I started out just creating a family blog to document recent happenings in our lives for our friends and family.  I would share things that I created on the blog, and got lots of positive feedback.  I loved reading design blogs and thought it would be nice to have a blog separate from our personal one just to showcase my designs.

2. Where do you get your craft ideas from?  

I love following the current trends and fashions, and a lot of my ideas come from shopping online at many of my favorite stores (Anthropologie, J.Crew, etc).  This gets my wheels turning and gets me really excited to create something that incorporates various aspects or designs I see online.

3. What would be your greatest advice to a beginning sewer? 

Take a sewing class!  You might think you can wing it for your first couple projects, but I can't tell you how many times I have relied on basic techniques that I learned in my beginning sewing class. 

6. What advice would you have to beginning bloggers? 

I know this sounds super cheesy, but find something that you really love to do, and are good at.  If you have the talent, people are going to be interested.  Also, put yourself out there.  Email various popular blogs and ask them to check out your blog or something you've created.  Kari at UCreate is really great at showcasing other talented bloggers.  This will get your name known and drive traffic to your site.

7. What was it that made your blog attract more followers?  

I think the fact that I sewed clothes for myself.  Many blogs out there show tutorials and project of clothing for their daughters and kids, but very few actually show how to make clothes for yourself.  Since I have a little boy, I wasn't whipping up little circle skirts.  But I loved sewing, so I decided to give it a go and sew things that I would want to wear.

9. If you could have dinner for anyone, alive or dead, who would it be? 

Michael Jackson

10. What is your favorite thing to sew? 


11. What is the most rewarding thing about being a blogger? 

The comments from others.  Most of them are strangers that I don't even know!  It is such a rewarding feeling to hear that others are looking at your blog and like your work.  

12. Do you get sponsored by businesses/individuals for giveaways, advertising, etc? If so, how did you start doing that? 

Yes, I just added the option on my blog to contact me to become a sponsor.  The more followers you get, the more interest potential sponsors will have.

13. Do you have any other advice? 

Take the time and work on your over all appearance of your blog.  A great header can go a long way.  I paid a friend to design my logo and it was worth every penny.

Interview with Lindsey Morlock from Gingerbread Bagels

Remember when I posted an interview from Jessica? Well here is another one like that. This is from Lindsey Morlock, author of Gingerbread Bagels. She responded with some really awesome answers!

1. Where do you get your recipe ideas from?
Typically ideas just pop into my head. But sometimes I’ll have an idea for a flavor combination and that flavor combination develops into a recipe. Other times my recipes are inspired by my childhood or travels.

2. How difficult is it to create your recipes?
I’m a perfectionist so it takes a bit longer only for that reason. I usually will keep doing a recipe over until I feel it’s just right.

3. What advice would you have to beginning bloggers?
From the beginning, know what you want your blog to be about. It’s a lot easier to gain and keep readers if they know what to expect from your blog and it’s important that your readers know who the person behind the blog is.

Connect with other bloggers and your readers. Blogging isn’t just about you and your blog. It’s about forming connections with others. Comment on other peoples' blogs and try your best to respond to questions from your readers. Remember to always leave a comment on someone’s blog if they leave one on yours.

Join groups. I participate a lot in Foodbuzz and Tasty Kitchen.

Blog often and have somewhat of a schedule. If you post 3 days a week, your readers are expecting to hear from you.

Have fun and don’t take blogging too seriously. If you don’t have time to blog, don’t stress out.

4. If you could make dinner for anyone, alive or dead, and then eat it with them, who would it be?
Walt Disney. I’ve been a huge Disney fan since I was a child and I find Walt Disney incredibly fascinating and creative.

5. What is your favorite thing to cook?
I love baking cakes since it involves cake decorating which is a huge passion of mine.

6. What is the most rewarding thing about being a blogger?
When someone takes the time to write a comment on my blog or send me an email to let me know how much they enjoyed one of my recipes. That always puts a smile on my face.

7. Do you get sponsored by businesses/individuals for giveaways, advertising, etc? If so, how did you start doing that?
For giveaways, the companies will contact me through email wanting to know if I’d like to try out a product and host a giveaway. They will provide the product and send it to the winner of the giveaway.

Bran Muffins

I know what you're thinking. Bran muffins are gross!
You happen to be wrong though. They are one of my most favoritest (yes, its a word) foods on the whole planet. Seriously. When they're hot and just came out of the oven...mmmm...pure bliss. Especially with a lot little bit of melted butter on top. Many people eat bran stuff because they aren't regular, but I just eat it because it tastes delicious.

Fabulous Bran Muffins(adapted from All Recipes(Janet Kalman Villada))

1 1/2 c wheat bran
1 c buttermilk
1/3 c vegetable oil
1 egg
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners.
2. Mix together the wheat bran and buttermilk; let stand for 10 minutes. I was expecting the bran to soak up the milk and get really soft, but it didn't, and they cooked fine anyways :)
3. Beat together oil, egg, sugar and vanilla and add to buttermilk/bran mixture. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Stir flour mixture into buttermilk mixture, until just blended.
4. Spoon batter into prepared muffin tins. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
5. Enjoy plain or with butter or jam on them!

 So, as you know, this is a food blog. Eventually, this post will be food related. Promise. 

I love changing my hair color. I started highlighting in 6th or 7th grade(just subtle ones) and then worked to a more intense blonde. My sophomore year of high school, I decided to go back to my "natural" color, which really (before I started coloring) was a dark dirty blonde/light-ish brown. I picked up a discount "brown" color at the grocery store, and then ended up with black hair, which I told people was close to my natural color, because I didn't realize until later how dark it was.  

After that, I didn't color my hair for a while and it faded to what was really my natural color was. 

Since then, it's been different shades of blonde, red, and brown. I still haven't decided which is my favorite because both blonde and brown are fun. Red isn't my thing :)

I know when you started reading this post, you secretly hoped I would include a "hair color history." Well, you're lucky, because I am. Sorry.

 I don't have a recent pic, but now I am a medium brown.

In April, I got highlights done by my most favorite hairstylist in the entire world(you can see that above). She's cut my hair since I was in 6th grade, and knows my hair really well. I've never been disappointed. My cousin highlighted my hair a few weeks before the wedding, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't wedding worthy, so I called Cheryl and got a last minute appointment in 2 days before the wedding. Every collection of wedding advice has something that says not to get your hair done right before your wedding, but I wasn't scared because I trusted her. And of course, it turned out excellent. 

Anyways, since then, I haven't done anything to it. Being newly wedded students, I figured I'd save some money and just use a box kit. I'd had success with them before, so....I wasn't worried. A few weeks ago, I decided just to do a blonde color that was supposed to be about the same color as my highlights. It turned out to be severe bleach, and I ended up with this: 

ummmm gross right? It's pretty yellow. Cute hubs though :)

I sucked it up and lived with it for a week or so, and then decided to do another try of the same color and hope it got more blonde. Instead, it turned very bronzy orange. To avoid the risk of losing all my hair(although I'm not sure that would have been all bad), I waited another week and a half, and then dyed it brown. So, I've spent $36 to get my hair to a nice brassy brown. I'm going to do another run of brown sometime next week, and then not touch my hair ever again. It probably would have been worth it just to pay to have it done :)

If you skipped reading all that(and I don't blame you), the point is that my hair is damaged. 

 I really needed something to help add more moisture to my hair, so I Googled some remedies, and created my own based off of those. It really helped too!

Hair Mask 
1 egg
2 Tbs milk
2 Tbs olive oil
1 tsp honey

Whisk until well combined. Massage into hair, especially paying attention to the ends. (You might have to make 2 batches if your hair is as damaged as mine--I did). Cover your head with a plastic bag(not your mouth, obviously) or a shower cap, and then a towel, and leave in for 10-15 minutes. Rinse out with coolish warm water(don't get it too hot or the egg will scramble!) and then shampoo and condition normally. Then enjoy your new healthy hair!

The egg helps bring out the natural shine in your hair. It also contains vitamin A, which will help fix a dry scalp.
The milk can help correct frizzy, dry, and damaged hair.
Olive oil makes your hair softer and also adds shine.
Honey helps to smooth the cuticle.

Chicken Stuffed Peppers

I just had a fantastic weekend camping! We went up to my bro-in-law's grandparent's cabin Friday night and ate food, rode motorcycles, took pictures, and had a blast! Here's a few pics. I'll post more later too!

It was so much fun. I'm so glad it worked out for us to go! 

Here's a little recipe I came up with a few weeks ago. It's quick, easy, delicious, and definitely something you can throw together last minute. Enjoy!

Chicken Stuffed Peppers(this recipe is for two, but you could easily adjust it :) )

2 green peppers
2 c shredded chicken 
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can corn, drained
1 can green chiles, drained
a dash of onion powder
3 twists of sea salt
garlic salt 
1/2 c cheddar cheese, plus 1/2 c
1. Cut the tops off of the peppers and clean out the insides. Place the peppers in a pot of boiling water for 3-5 minutes, or until they start to soften. 
2. Remove the peppers from the pot and make sure there isn't any excess water on the inside. 
3. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients except the peppers, and the extra 1/2 cup of cheese until combined. 
4. Fill the peppers to the top with the mixture, and top with the remaining cheddar cheese. 
5. Put in a baking dish and cover with foil. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for 5 or so more, or until the cheese begins to brown. Serve immediately.

Maybe you've seen posts this morning about Jennie, from In Jennie's Kitchen , who lost her husband Mikey last week. Somehow, I missed this until today. Jennie suggested to those who wanted to help to make her husbands favorite Creamy Peanut Butter Pie today in honor of him, in a heart wrenching post she shared about her husband (For Mikey). I can't imagine what Jennie and her daughters are going through right now. Since I just read this post this morning, I didn't have time to make a pie, but I can still do the second part of her post, which said to "hug [those you love] like there's no tomorrow because today is the only guarantee we can count on." My thoughts and prayers go out to Jennie and her family at this time.

Adobo Chicken Tacos

Remember way back forever ago when I promised to post the recipe for the tacos we ate with our pistachio mango salsa? Well, I am finally posting it. It's not even that much of a recipe, but it is mighty tasty!

Chicken Adobo Tacos

1-2 large chicken breasts (depending on how much chicken you need)
1/2 jar(8.25oz) of adobo( I used Dona Maria)
Corn tortillas
Queso Fresco(Mexican Cheese)
Pistachio Mango Salsa

1. Thaw the chicken, then rub with adobo. Pour the remaining adobo over top the chicken, and let marinade for 1-2 hours. Grill until fully cooked, and then cut into chunks.
2. Heat some oil in a pan, and once heated, place the corn tortillas in it and let them cook for a couple seconds on each side. Then, place on paper towels to drain the grease.
3. Put some chicken, cheese, and salsa inside a tortilla, and enjoy!

Super easy, right? And delicious!

Friday Thoughts

Today at the office where I work, we had a "Graze," which is where everyone brings food and we all eat a lot and feel happy. Today's was a breakfast theme, so I brought my French Toast Cupcakes which are by far the most popular recipe on my blog. I'm pretty sure they were a hit!
Other people brought waffle batter and a waffle iron, muffins, fruit, juice, biscuits and gravy, quiche, eggs, sticky buns, and lots more. I had a biscuit and gravy, some eggs, a sticky bun, and a waffle with strawberries, raspberries, powdered sugar, whipped cream, and chocolate chips. That was by far my favorite. I'm stuffed! Breakfast food is my favorite! I need to learn to resist.

On another food related note,  I LOVE Food Network. When ever I watch TV, that's usually what I turn on. My favorite show currently is Food Network star.

They are my favorites! I'm also really looking forward to this week's episode because it is Iron Chef! Yay!

I also really love Cupcake Wars. This week's episode was for a VIP party at the Dodgers stadium. One of the girls on the show used hot dogs in her cupcakes! It was so gross! Woody and  I were brainstorming about how you could make a cupcake that was actually good with hot dogs, and we decided that its not possible. I think the only thing in that shape with hot dogs in it that I would eat would be corn dog muffins.

We are also pretty hooked on Storage Wars.

The characters on this are so funny, especially with their interactions with each other. They fight and get upset with each other, but this week, there were some new characters, so they were all kind of banding together and ganging up on the other new people. It was pretty funny. We really want to go check out all of their thrift stores when we're in CA in a few weeks. haha.

I always love finding new blogs, and this week I found some good ones!
I found the Disney Food Blog which is pretty much a collection of everything food offered at the parks, cruises, etc. I LOVE Disney and I love food. SOoooooo naturally...I love this blog.

I found Danelle's blog Let's Dish because she commented on my blog. She found my blog on Facebook because we're from the same town, and she saw that one of her friends, who I also know, had "liked" my blog's Facebook page. I went and stalked her blog, and it is beautiful! She has a photo blog, which is currently making me really hungry for a trip to San Fran, and a food blog which is beautiful! I want her talent!

 I found Ashley's over at SloanBook. I really like reading her posts because she's just super interesting and her writing is entertaining.

I also am loving my usual favorites, and I'll post my favorite starred ones from this week on Monday!

Cake Batter Frosting

I love anything cake batter. Doesn't everyone? It always reminds me of swiping my finger in the mixing bowl while my mom wasn't looking :)
The best part about this recipe is that it is super easy! And delicious!

Cake Batter Frosting

3/4 c whipping cream
3-4 Tbs powdered sugar(or more if you need it)
1 1/2 c Funfetti cake mix
1 Tbs milk (if needed)

Whip the whipping cream and powdered sugar until soft peaks form, then mix in the cake mix. Watch it carefully, and add either more milk or more sugar to achieve the right consistency. Continue to whip until the desired consistency is reached. (Think frosting consistency!). Use on brownies, cookies, cupcakes, or on your fingers! Make sure to store in the refrigerator.

I made brownies from the box and then put them in my mini cupcake pan. They were PERFECT!

Here I used it on some homemade brownies. Still delicious!
