Elimination Diet: Day 1

As you may have read earlier, I, along with my doctor, believe that I have food allergies. He gave me a couple suggestions to try and figure things out.  His first was to cut out all foods except for brown rice and vegetables. His second was, if I had specific guesses to what the allergies were, to cut those foods out and see if they make a difference.

Originally, I was going to be doing the brown rice and veggie one, but holy cow. I was dying. I had a cabbage, cilantro, onion, and carrot salad for lunch, and I didn't even eat it all. For dinner, I had brown rice with chicken and tomatoes. This was actually pretty good, but I just felt heavy and kind of sick. Plus I cheated on the chicken.

Sooooo I decided to take the opposite route, and cut out the foods I suspected of being allergens. I think that wheat, eggs, and dairy are the most likely to be the culprits, so for next 7-10 days, I'll be without those. This is definitely a better option, for me personally, because I'm currently going to school full time, working, and busy with lots of other stuff, so protein and energy foods are super important! If I don't find a solution, I will probably try the total elimination in a few weeks once schools over.

Tonight, we went to the store and bough some soy milk, gluten free Rice Krispies, and two bags of rice cakes. I'm more excited now, and I feel like this is something I can actually do! Yay!

On top of this, I've also started taking a probiotic. I'm not sure if it's affecting me yet..but we'll see. I'm also supposed to be taking fish oil, but I have to convince myself that I can handle the aftertaste first. :/ blehhh.

I'll keep ya'll updated through the next week or so with all that's going on on the meals that I eat!

Good luck. I hope you find what the issue is. I'll probably be in the same boat soon. I used to take probiotics every day. They really help. I did it for my IBS. Lots of people swear by it. It does really help.

What have your symptoms been? I have had "food issues" for a few years now and I still can't pin down exactly what my problem is, besides potential IBS. But just a suggestion, if you think you may have a gluten allergy, it will take a few months of omitting it from your diet to see if that really is the source of your issues. (I had to go about 8 months without, but that didn't end up being my issue.) Anyway, let me know what you find out- I'm interested in any helpful info you may have to share!

@Liz-My biggest symptom is eczema on my hands, but I also have problems with bloating and bowel stuff. Thanks for the advice though! I'm not sure if it is gluten. I've been avoiding milk for the last few months, but still eating milk products, and that has helped somewhat, so maybe that's it? I'm not really sure though

My biggest and worst IBS trigger is garlic and onions. It's in almost everything. My mother and grandmother also were allergic, which is how I narrowed it down.

@Bethany-I sort of wish people in my family had food allergies so that I could narrow it down as well! But I do eat lots of garlic and onions, so maybe I will have to look into that.

Gluten causes sooooo many issues. Anything from stomach problems, to headaches, brain fogginess, & skin issues. I had stomach pains for 10 years before I discovered I had celiac disease. Every person is different in how soon you will notice how you feel. Some people feel better after 3 days. I felt better after 2 weeks, and felt almost normal at 6 weeks. And probiotics, yes! They help a bunch. Digestive enzymes are good too to help with the digestion of your food. Good luck!

I gave up last time I tried because it seemed "too hard," but I just started doing a gluten free diet on Monday again. This time it's going a lot better and I have found how many choices there are to actually eat that are gluten free. And I feel better already!
